Some highlights of my time at Alderman Peel
High School:
No student has left this
school and been unemployed for the last 3 years
The Schools Curriculum Award in 2002 was the
school’s first ‘logo’ and led to my taking 2
students to London for the award. Norman Lamb MP
kindly welcomed us afterwards to tea on the terrace
of the House of Commons. For both students it was
their first time in London
Gifted & Talented Summer Schools
Repeated evidence of students supporting each other.
Three episodes stand out: the huge cheer for an
autistic boy who won the first Crawford Cup for best
performance in the Olympeel Games; the rapturous
applause for a Year 10 girl who had just finished
singing a number from ‘Cats’ at Presentation Day;
and most talent shows.
Attaining specialist status as a sports college.
This development finally took Alderman Peel into the
‘premier league’ of schools and ensured it would be
funded on a more level playing field. It also seemed
to give the school more self-belief and direction

Sports College
status continues to provide exciting opportunities. Applications
are being made for the role of Young Ambassador, a post which will
enable the post-holders to visit top sporting venues and meet
celebrated sports men and women. In March, the first visit will take
place by senior staff to Nigeria to set up a link with a school from
which students will doubtless benefit in the coming months.
Looking back on the last few years, it is refreshing to see that
students are global in their outlook and linked in a number of ways
with their peers in France, India and now Africa...
